Coldplay es la historia de cuatro amigos que se conocieron en la universidad de Londres en 1996. Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jon Buckland y Will Champion pronto empezaron a componer sus propias canciones y a realizar algún que otro ensayo, hasta que en mayo de 1998 supieron aprovechar la oportunidad de grabar ‘Safety’, su primer EP, que autofinanciaron y que debía servir como una demo de presentación de cara a las casas discográficas, sin embargo finalmente decidieron editar y distribuir una tirada de 500 copias, por lo que después del éxito obtenido por la banda este EP se ha convertido en una de las joyas más buscadas por los seguidores de Coldplay.
Durante 1999 se dedicaron a hacer pequeñas giras por Inglaterra en busca de un contrato discográfico, hasta que en primavera de ese año consiguieron llamar la atención de la etiqueta independiente Fierce Panda. Y no sólo eso, consiguieron que uno de los semanarios musicales más importantes de UK, el NME, se fijara en ellos y los convirtiera en poco tiempo en la mejor nueva banda. Una vez en Fierce Panda, Colplay editó dos EP’s más, ‘Brothers & Sisters’ y ‘The Blue Room’, cada uno más exitoso que el anterior.
El grupo estaba consiguiendo estar en boca de todo el mundo llegando a ser teloneros de grupos como Catatonia. Coldplay fichó por Parlophone en el 2000 y pocos meses después lanzarían ya sus primeros singles, ‘Shiver» y ‘Yellow’, como adelanto de ‘Parachutes’, su álbum de debut. ‘Yellow’ fue sin duda la canción que les dio el empujón final en el difícil mundo de la música. Lo que nadie puede negar es la rapidez con la que el éxito ha llegado al grupo, y es que en un par de años y con unas composiciones excelentes, Coldplay se ha situado a la altura de los grupos de la élite británica.
