La Selección de fútbol de Ecuador es el equipo representativo del país en las competiciones oficiales. Su organización está a cargo de la Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol, perteneciente a la CONMEBOL. En 1930, la selección ecuatoriana de fútbol fue invitada a intervenir en el primer Mundial de Fútbol, sin embargo rechazó hacer un aporte monetario para este evento, debiendo esperar más de 70 años para participar nuevamente. Es, junto a Chile y Venezuela, la única selección sudamericana que no ha ganado la Copa América.
Ecuador estuvo a punto de clasificar al Mundial de Inglaterra 1966 de la mano de Alberto Spencer cuando se disputó un partido de desempate con Chile en Perú para obtener la clasificación. En ese partido, Ecuador perdió 1-2 y Chile fue el clasificado.
Luego en 1996, en las eliminatorias sudamericanas para el Mundial en Francia 1998, el equipo ecuatoriano contó con la participación de una gran variedad de estrellas futbolísticas nacionales como Luis Capurro, Álex Aguinaga, Eduardo Hurtado, Ángel Fernández, Iván Kaviedes, Agustín Delgado, Ariel Graziani, entre otros. En esta ocasión, la selección estuvo a 4 puntos de clasificar, pero se quedó en el camino. Sucedió un hecho histórico cuando en Quito, Ecuador venció a Argentina por primera vez en un partido por las eliminatorias. Luego, Sucedió otro hecho histórico cuando en Quito, Ecuador venció a Venezuela por primera vez en una compilación del partido por las eliminatorias.
La selección del Ecuador participó por primera vez en una Copa Mundial de Fútbol en el evento realizado el año 2002, tras haber obtenido sorpresivamente el segundo lugar de la clasificatoria sudamericana, donde se destaca además el histórico triunfo sobre Brasil por primera vez en eliminatorias. Ya en el mundial, la competencia se realizó en Corea del Sur y Japón, y la selección ecuatoriana tuvo una actuación regular donde sufrió dos derrotas, la primera contra la selección de fútbol de Italia por 0 goles a 2 y la segunda contra México por 1 gol a 2. Su única victoria fue contra la selección de fútbol de Croacia, con gol de Edison Méndez. En la estadística final del torneo, la selección ecuatoriana quedó en la posición número 24 de 32.
En el año 2006 repitió la clasificación a la Mundial en Alemania. En esta participación, la selección ecuatoriana venció a Polonia y a Costa Rica, colocándose en segundo puesto de su grupo detrás del anfitrión Alemania, logrando clasificarse por primera vez en su historia a octavos de final, donde perdió con Inglaterra, después de un partido muy disputado. Finalmente la selección ecuatoriana quedó en doceava posición, siendo una de las revelaciones del torneo.
A partir del sorprendente papel en el año 2006, se esperaba un mejor desempeño de la selección de Ecuador en la Copa América Venezuela 2007, sin embargo, el equipo fue eliminado en la primera fase.
Ecuador actualmente se encuentra en el puesto 35 segun el ranking de la fifa recientemente publicado el 20 de noviembre del 2009.
