Generally nanotechnology deals with structures of the size 100 <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Nanometer\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/Nanometer\">nanometers<\/a> or smaller, and involves developing materials or devices within that size. Nanotechnology is very diverse, ranging from novel extensions of conventional <a title=\"Semiconductor device\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/Semiconductor_device\">device physics<\/a>, to completely new approaches based upon <a title=\"Molecular self-assembly\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/Molecular_self-assembly\">molecular self-assembly<\/a>, to developing <a title=\"Nanomaterials\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/Nanomaterials\">new materials<\/a> with dimensions on the nanoscale, even to speculation on whether we can <a title=\"Molecular nanotechnology\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/Molecular_nanotechnology\">directly control matter on the atomic scale<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There has been much debate on the future of <a title=\"Implications of nanotechnology\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/Implications_of_nanotechnology\">implications of nanotechnology<\/a>. Nanotechnology has the potential to create many new materials and devices with wide-ranging <a title=\"List of nanotechnology applications\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/List_of_nanotechnology_applications\">applications<\/a>, such as in <a title=\"Nanomedicine\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/Nanomedicine\">medicine<\/a>, <a title=\"Nanoelectronics\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/Nanoelectronics\">electronics<\/a>, and energy production. On the other hand, nanotechnology raises many of the same issues as with any introduction of new technology, including concerns about the <a title=\"Nanotoxicology\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/Nanotoxicology\">toxicity<\/a> and environmental impact of nanomaterials <sup><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/eduamend\/wp-admin\/#cite_note-0\"><span>[<\/span>1<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>, and their potential effects on global economics, as well as speculation about various <a title=\"Grey goo\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.espol.edu.ec\/wiki\/Grey_goo\">doomsday scenarios<\/a>.
