Existen dos tipos de materiales en que se puede aplicar un fiel transporte de luz; vidrio o pl\u00e1stico. En el mundo de las telecomunicaciones se usa m\u00e1s fibra \u00f3ptica de vidrio, ya que este posee una baja atenuaci\u00f3n con respecto al pl\u00e1stico. Este proceso se lo hace en la manufactura de la fibra por medio de un ba\u00f1o qu\u00edmico o haciendo rugosa la superficie del core con maquinaria especializada.<\/p>\n<p>Para el efecto de iluminaci\u00f3n lateral, es necesario un cladding transparente para que la luz se escape al exterior y se vean los efectos de iluminancia.
