'Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck' Will Hit Theatres Before HBO Premiere

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck director Brett Morgen stopped by South by Southwest this week to screen the much-anticipated documentary's "final, locked cut of Montage of Heck complete with final mix" and share big news regarding the film's future. In addition to its current critically acclaimed run on the film festival circuit, Montage of Heck will also receive a more traditional theatrical release in April.

Starting April 10th, Montage of Heck will spread to cinemas in over 72 countries, including the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia, Morgen tweeted. On April 24th, the Cobain documentary will officially be released at movie theatres in New York, Los Angeles and Nirvana's hometown of Seattle. It all leads up to the film's May 4th debut on HBO.

The theatrical release of Montage of Heck accomplishes two things: Firstly, many Nirvana fans – especially those in the 72 other countries where the film will hit theatres – don't have access to HBO and therefore would have to wait until the movie's DVD release, which Morgen penciled in for November, Billboard reports. Also, the film's brief U.S. theatrical run would make Montage of Heck eligible for next year's Academy Awards, where it could contend in the Best Documentary Feature category.

A Montage of Heck companion book, set to hit shelves April 7th, will precede the film's theatrical release and May 4th HBO premiere. However, Morgen still hasn't revealed the specifics about the documentary's soundtrack, which the director previously revealed would feature "a mind-blowing 12-minute acoustic Cobain unheard track."
