The total length of the river is 3,180 kilometers (1,976 miles) and it is Pakistan's longest river.<\/p>\n<p>The river has a total drainage area exceeding 1,165,000 square kilometers (450,000 square miles). The river's estimated annual flow stands at around 207 cubic kilometers, making it the twenty-first largest river in the world in terms of annual flow. Beginning at the heights of the world with glaciers, the river feeds the <a title=\"Ecosystem\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecosystem\">ecosystem<\/a> of temperate forests, <a title=\"Plain\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plain\">plains<\/a> and arid countryside. The word <em><a title=\"Punjab region\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Punjab_region\">Punjab<\/a><\/em> is a \\ word <em>panj<\/em> meaning <em>Five<\/em>, and <em>\u0101b<\/em> meaning <em>Water<\/em>, giving the literal meaning of the <em>Land of the Five Rivers<\/em>.
