Eduard Punset Casals<\/strong>[<\/span>1]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> (born in Barcelona<\/a>, Spain<\/a>, November 9, 1936) is a Spanish lawyer<\/a>, economist<\/a>, and scientific popularizer. He holds a degree in Law from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid<\/a> and a Master's<\/a> in Economic Sciences from the University of London<\/a>. He has been an economic writer for the BBC<\/a>, economics director of the Latin American edition of the newsweekly The Economist<\/a><\/em>, and an economist for the International Monetary Fund<\/a> in the United States<\/a> and Haiti<\/a>. As a specialist on the impact of emerging technologies<\/a>, Punset has been a consultant<\/a> to COTEC, Advising Professor<\/a> of International Marketing<\/a> at ESADE<\/a>, president of the Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico Bull, Professor of Innovation<\/a> and Technology at the IE Business School<\/a> (formerly Instituto de Empresa) (Madrid<\/a>), President of Enher, Deputy General Director of Economic and Financial<\/a> Studies at the Banco Hispanoamericano<\/a>, and Coordinator of the Strategic Plan for the Information Society in Catalonia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He played a prominent role, as the UCD<\/a>'s Minister of Relations with the European Communities<\/a>, when Spain opened its economy to the rest of the world. As financial advisor to the Government of Catalonia<\/a> he took part in the implementation of the State of the Autonomies, and, as president of the European Parliament<\/a>'s delegation to Poland<\/a>, he supervised part of the process of economic transformation undertaken in Eastern countries after the fall of the Berlin Wall<\/a>. When Spain joined the European Union<\/a>, Punset was elected to the European Parliament<\/a> in representation of the CDS<\/a> in 1987 and 1989.<\/p>\n
