El Tri es una banda mexicana de rock fundada el 12 de octubre de 1968 en la Ciudad de México, originalmente conocidos como Three Souls In My Mind. Está liderada por el músico Alejandro Lora, músico, cantante, y autor de la mayoría de las canciones de la banda. La banda ha experimentado con sonidos de rock y blues,
El Tri ha vendido más de 30 millones de discos 1 en su carrera y ha tenido cinco nominaciones para el Premio Grammy bajo la categoría de Mejor Álbum de Rock en Español por su álbumes: Cuando tú No estás (1998), Fin de siglo (1999), No podemos volar (2001), y 35 Años y lo que falta todavía (2005) y Mejor Album De Rock Vocal Duo O Grupo para Alex Lora: Del Three a El Tri (40 rolas del alma. Mi mente y Mi aferración) (2009). En el 1971 El Tri participó en el Festival de Rock y Ruedas de Avándaro, cuando aun eran los Three Souls In My Mind.
Los principios: Three Souls In My Mind
A la temprana edad de 16 años Alex Lora forma el grupo de rock and roll Three Souls in My Mind (Tres Almas En Mi Mente) en 1968 con Carlos «Charly» Hauptvogel en batería, Miguel «El Zoita» Flores (hermano menor de Javier «El Zoa», entonces de los Sinners, y más recientemente, sus descendientes, Naftalina) en el bajo, el joven cuñado de Javier Bátiz José Pampín al requinto, y el propio Alex en guitarra y voz. Llegaron a nombrarse Three Souls In My Mind Rock and Roll Band Mexico City, pero después volvieron a simplemente Three Souls In My Mind. El ex-tecladista de Los Locos del Ritmo, Lalo Toral, trabajaba con la compañía de discos Cisne Raff y convence a TSIMM de firmar con la disquera. Y en el año 68, como prueba graban el sencillo El abuelo y Me la he pasado divagando. Dos años más tarde (1970) entran al estudio con el ingeniero Ernesto de la Cruz para grabar su primer disco que se tituló Colección Avándaro Vol. 1 que incluye canciones en inglés y español. A mitad de la grabación Miguel Flores se fue a Países Bajos y Ernesto Ernie recomienda a Toño Limón a tomar el lugar. Al año siguiente sacan su segundo álbum titulado Colección Avándaro Vol.2, cantado todo en inglés y en el que se incluyen tres temas del álbum interior: Lennon Blues, Let me Swim, y Don´t ask me, con letras de Lora quien dominaba el idioma. En ese tiempo entra Roberto Melchoreno quien aparece en la portada.
El estilo de la banda era considerado como acid rock en los primeros dos discos. Después el escritor Parménides García Saldaña convence a la banda a que dejaran de tocar acid rock y se cambiaran a Rhythm and Blues dejándose crecer el pelo que era un estilo representativo del género. Con su tercer álbum Oye Cantinero, la banda se hace reconocer por todo el país ya que este tercer álbum es en español e incluye el tema homónimo que aun es popular entre los fans de la banda. Luego de este álbum, la banda decide cantar en español porque la mayoría de sus fans no entendían las canciones en inglés. En total la banda grabó 15 LP’s, 13 en estudio y uno doble grabado en vivo en el Reclusorio Oriente.
Avándaro 1971
Los días 11 y 12 de septiembre de 1971, la banda participa en el Festival de Rock y Ruedas de Avándaro en México, donde más de 300.000 personas se unieron pacíficamente. En el festival compartieron escenario con El Ritual, Tinta Blanca, Love Army, Los Dug Dug’s, Fer y sus cuates, y Peace and Love, entre otras. El festival ayudó Three Souls y las demás bandas presentes a exponer su música y crear una base de fans. Para mediados de los ochentas, los Three Souls In My Mind se convirtieron en un fenómeno rockero alrededor de América Latina. A pocos años de este evento entra Sergio Mancera en guitarra y reemplaza a Ernesto de León. Ernesto de León se fue a crear su propia banda de rock y blues Banda Oscar de León.
Cambiando su nombre a El Tri
Para fines del año 1983, la banda empieza a tener problemas de intereses y proyectos y en 1984, Alex Lora y Carlos Hauptvogel se enfrentan en una batalla jurídica por los derechos del nombre de la banda y terminan separándose. Huaptvogel se queda con los derechos del nombre y Alex Lora continúa la música de Three Souls bajo un nuevo nombre: El Tri.
