El problema de la demarcación se refiere, dentro de la filosofía de la ciencia, a la cuestión de definir los límites que deben configurar el concepto «ciencia«. Las fronteras suelen establecerse entre lo que es conocimiento científico y no científico, entre ciencia y pseudociencia, y entre ciencia y religión. El planteamiento de este problema conocido como problema generalizado de la demarcación abarca estos tres casos. El problema generalizado, en último término, lo que intenta es encontrar criterios para poder decidir, entre dos teorías dadas, cuál de ellas es más «científica».
Tras más de un siglo de diálogo entre filósofos de la ciencia y científicos en diversos campos, y a pesar de un amplio consenso acerca de las bases generales del método científico,[] los límites que demarcan lo que es ciencia, y lo que no lo es, continúan siendo debatidos.[]
Prosiguiendo con la problemática (pseudociencia) el término tiene connotaciones peyorativas, porque se usa para indicar que las materias así etiquetadas son errónea o engañosamente presentadas como científicas. Por este motivo, aquellos que cultivan determinada «pseudociencia», normalmente rechazan esta clasificación.
La pseudociencia hace uso manifiesto de la terminología científica y del dogmatismo para aparentar seriedad y veracidad. El dogmatismo es la práctica de intentar hacer válido o creíble un concepto mediante la mención premeditada de alguna autoridad o institución, básicamente por su grado de credibilidad ante los ojos del público. Por ejemplo, los ufólogos aluden mucho al nombre del difunto Carl Sagan y al programa SETI (búsqueda de vida extraterrestre inteligente) para dar credibilidad a su monomanía. En el ejemplo de arriba, la pseudociencia hace uso de raíces lingüísticas empleadas corrientemente por los científicos para aparentar tener fundamentos reales. Lo mismo pasa con el término Astrología, el cual literalmente significa «Ciencia de los Astros».
Otro caso de Pseudociencia es la búsqueda de Sasquash y otros seres fantásticos. Sasquash es un ser mítico norteamericano. Al igual que el Yeti del Tíbet y el Chupa-cabras de Latinoamérica, el Sasquash es un ser escurridizo y oculto a los ojos de los científicos y de la gran mayoría de los seres humanos. Incluso hay algunos criptozoólogos que están malgastando su tiempo y su conocimiento en la búsqueda de ese hombre-simio americano.
En otro ejemplo, los iridólogos (personas que «diagnostican» las enfermedades a través del análisis de los iris de los ojos) dicen que los científicos fuimos «comprados» por las empresas dedicadas a la producción de reactivos y de aparatos para realizar análisis clínicos, para que negáramos la veracidad de esa forma de adivinación (¡vaya! yo no he recibido un quinto).
Un ejemplo más común en la actualidad es el Creacionismo. Los creacionistas están con un pié metido en la ciencia y el otro pié metido en la fantasía. Ellos dicen que la evolución es factible, pero que fue dirigida por un ser superior, llámese Dios, alien, o raza superior. Ellos aceptan que no hay evidencia a favor de la existencia de ese ser superior, pero aluden que tampoco la hay en contra, o sea, que si no puedes demostrar que existe, tampoco puedes demostrar que no existe, y que por ello es algo real.
Permítaseme un ejemplo más: Muchos creen que las hadas existen. Su argumento básico para afirmarlo es que la ciencia no puede demostrar que no existan. Sin embargo, no existe ningún efecto en el cosmos que haya sido originado por una acción, directa o indirecta, ejercida por esos seres mitológicos. Para un científico, la ausencia de efectos ejercidos por las hadas en el cosmos, aunada a la ausencia absoluta de esos seres, es suficiente para comprobar que las hadas no existen.
Otro ejemplo de pseudociencia es la hipnosis regresiva. En estos casos, una persona especialista en psiquiatría o psicología clínica asegura que por medio de la hipnosis cualquier persona puede traer a su memoria los recuerdos de vidas pasadas, refiriéndose a «vidas pasadas» como «vidas que se vivieron antes de nacer en este mundo». De esta manera, ellos dicen que la ciencia ha verificado la reencarnación. Por supuesto, ellos eluden el estorbillo de la inducción deliberada que el hipnotizador ejerce sobre el hipnotizado, y hablan poco o nada de ello. Siempre que ellos exhiben un caso de glosolalia (cuando el hipnotizado emite sonidos extraños) se refieren al grupo de sonidos erráticos como «lenguas muertas», «lenguajes no terrenales», «dialectos perdidos de la América precolombina», etc. De aquí extraeremos los últimos juicios, por medio de nuestra sindéresis.
Es evidente aquí que la pseudociencia recurre a nociones que no pueden ser comprobadas por tratarse de eventos del pasado y que no fueron registrados por historiadores fidedignos.
Filósofos de la ciencia que se han ocupado extensamente de esta cuestión, como Karl Popper, consideran que el carácter de pseudociencia depende menos del ámbito u objeto de estudio que de la actitud de sus seguidores hacia la crítica y, en general, hacia el método científico. Así, un físico o un biólogo podrían comportarse de un modo dogmático, mientras que un historiador o un sociólogo pueden presentar sus tesis de una manera que inviten a la refutación (o «falsación», en lenguaje popperiano). En general, y en la medida en que pueda resultar aplicable, la metodología científica exige que las teorías puedan someterse a pruebas empíricas rigurosas, mientras que a las pseudociencias, o bien no será posible aplicarles sistemas de refutación (por tratarse de formulaciones ambiguas), o bien sus partidarios protegerán la teoría (por ejemplo, con hipótesis auxiliares o ad hoc, formuladas a posteriori), en lugar de someterla a ensayos que puedan refutarla.
