[]Los chinos ponemos usualmente el apellido delante del nombre. Tenemos apellidos simples y compuestos. Los primeros son constituidos por una sola sílaba como en los casos de Zhang, Wang, Li, y los últimos de dos sílabas como por ejemplo Gongsun, Shangguan, Dongguo, Ouyang, etc.. Los apellidos simples representan la inmensa mayoría y los compuestos son una minoría.
De acuerdo con la tradición, los chinos usamos generalmente el apellido del padre; no obstante también los hay que emplean el de la madre. Pero, ¿cuántos apellidos hay en la china? Según el Libro de los apellidos chinos compilado durante la dinastía Song (siglos X-XIII) son usuales 484. en realidad hay muchos más, y obras recientes han recogido más de cinco mil.
Entre en pueblo circula un dicho que reza: Zhang, Wang, Li, Zhao fluyen por todas partes. El chino “fluir” es (Liú), que es homónimo del apellido (Liú); entonces, el dicho equivaldría a decir: Zhang, Wang, Li, Zhao, Liu por todas partes.
Esto quiere decir que estos cinco apellidos son los más usados y se extienden por todo el país
De los nombres chinos también hay simples y compuestos. Algunas personas, además de los nombres de pila y de infancia, tienen nombres propios públicos, sobrenombre y seudónimo. Antes los chinos se esmeraban mucho en dan nombre a un niño.
Algunos lo hacían según el registro genealógico y biográfico de la familia de modo que por el nombre se puede saber a qué generación de la misma pertenece una persona. Familias ilustres como las de Confucio y Demencio se han adherido desde la antigüedad hasta hoy día a este procedimiento de dar nombre en base a la genealogía familiar. A veces los nombres implican cierto sentido y entrañan alguna esperanza que se cifra en la persona, ejemplo (hacer méritos), (Proeza), (Esforzarse), etc. Otros, al nombrar no solo prestan atención al significado, sino también a la elegancia de las palabras que emplean.
Normalmente se puede distinguir a un nombre de una mujer conforme a sus nombres. Los hombres usan para sus nombres palabras enérgicas como Macho, Tigre, Dragón, Fortaleza, Firmeza, Espada, Solidez, etc. Las mujeres tienen en sus nombres palabras que denotan ternura y hermosura, como por ejemplo Fineza, Preciosidad, Fragancia, Aroma, Orquídea, Ciruela, etc. En la actualidad los nombres de los chinos tienden gradualmente a simplificarse, reduciendo a un simple signo.
